Schrötter fights for Top10 at the season opener in Qatar, Alcoba scores his first two Moto2 World Championship points
The LIQUI MOLY Intact GP team led by Marcel Schrötter and newcomer Jeremy Alcoba celebrates its first success of the 2022 season after both riders take home important world championship points with P10 and P14 after strong performances.
It was certainly not an easy weekend for the two Intact GP riders at the Lusail International Circuit in the desert of Qatar. While Marcel Schrötter was competing all three days with a freshly operated and sore hand, Jeremy Alcoba had to quickly build up confidence on his new Kalex Moto2 bike.
With second place in the Warm-Up, Marcel Schrötter showed that he can grit his teeth and push hard. After a rocket start, the Bavarian lost some ground again in an aggressive scramble in turn 1, but a few laps later, when he found his rhythm, the German made his way up to the tenth place. From there it was all about managing the position, as there was a gap of a good 2.5 seconds to the trio in front of him, consisting of Jorge Navarro, Cameron Beaubier, Joe Roberts. Behind, the 29-year-old had a gap of around 0.5s to his pursuer Jake Dixon until shortly before the end of the race. The experienced rider knew how to defend this position and, despite the hand injury, is delighted to have scored six championship points.
20-year-old Jeremy Alcoba backed up his words from Saturday with action. After qualifying, the Spaniard revealed that he had a strong pace on used tyres and therefore hoped to be strong towards the end of the race. And so it came to pass: after jumping from P22 to P17 at the start, he finally managed to hang on to rookie colleague Pedro Acosta and successfully work his way into the points. Despite track limits warnings and pressure from behind, Alcoba kept his nerves and is more than satisfied with 14th place and 2 points on his Moto2 debut.
This successful start to the season has whetted the appetite for more for everyone involved in the German racing team. In two weeks, from 18th - 20th of March, Indonesia premiers in the race calendar, as never before has a Moto2 race taken place on the Mandalika Street Circuit.
