Sensational start-to-finish victory at home GP – Agius makes Moto2 history at Phillip Island

It was a fairytale Sunday for Senna Agius: the Australian celebrated an impressive start-to-finish victory at the Phillip Island Circuit and made history as the first rider from his country to win the Australian Grand Prix in Moto2. With this triumph, his second Moto2 victory ever, Agius crowned a magical weekend. For teammate Manuel Gonzalez, the World Championship battle remains exciting after a tough race and seventh place.

Exactly one year ago, then Moto2 rookie Senna Agius stood on a Grand Prix podium for the very first time in Australia – this time he reached the top step. Right after the start, he took the lead in the LIQUI MOLY Australian Grand Prix over a strong field and never relinquished it. His pace on this 19th race Sunday of the season was simply outstanding: at times, the 20-year-old was almost six seconds ahead of his pursuers. To thunderous applause from his compatriots, the young Aussie confidently crossed the finish line of the legendary coastal circuit. Thanks to the 25 points, Agius moves up to eighth place in the World Championship standings and ensures that the German team is now just 37 points behind the leaders in the team standings.

Manuel Gonzalez put up a fierce fight in extremely windy conditions. After a strong start, the Spaniard initially led the race alongside Agius, before World Championship rival Diogo Moreira joined the battle. The tightly bunched leading group fought hard lap after lap, allowing further pursuers to close in until Gonzalez ultimately had to settle for seventh place. Although his lead in the overall standings has shrunk to two points, the Kalex rider remains the World Championship leader and travels to the next showdown with unbroken motivation: the Malaysian Grand Prix from 24th to 26th of October – the last overseas race of the season. There, Gonzalez wants to fight back and extend his lead again!

"I'm overjoyed! Winning at home is truly incredible. It wasn't my first victory, as I've already won at Silverstone, but I only secured it on the last lap. Today, however, was completely different, as I was in the lead the whole time. I knew from Friday that I had the pace to do it. I got off to a good start, but I was a little concerned about the bike in the first two laps. However, I quickly found my rhythm and was able to pull away. Then I saw that there were 15 laps to go and thought to myself: it's still a long way to go, but I want to see the finish line. I'm really proud to have achieved my first victory at Phillip Island. It's fantastic to do this in my home country, where my whole family and all my friends are here. I'm lost for words, and I've almost lost my voice because I was screaming the whole in-lap. A big thank you to the entire Intact GP team and all my guys because we worked really hard this weekend. It's great to reward them with a victory, and to do it this way is something amazing. Thank you, guys, I'm really proud of you all."

"Well, it was a more difficult race than expected, even though we started the day feeling fairly confident. I struggled right from the first lap but was able to fight with the guys. It's just a shame that I couldn't ride the bike as well in the final laps because I had used the rear tyre too much. Apart from that, I think it was a difficult weekend for us due to the early crash in FP1. That affected our work, especially our preparation for race day. On the positive side, we are still in contention and fighting for the podium even in difficult situations. I wanted to keep that up until the end, but as I said, it was too difficult in the final laps. Another positive point is that we now have some really good tracks coming up, such as Malaysia and Portugal, where I've had some really good races in the past and where the conditions also suit me very well. We lost points today, but we gained even more motivation. So now we'll go to Sepang and keep going there as before. A big thank you to the team."

"First of all, congratulations to Senna on his victory today! Well-deserved because he was the strongest rider this weekend. He didn't just lay the foundation for this triumph yesterday with his second place on the grid; we already saw on Friday that he had the best pace. Due to the weather on Saturday morning, we weren't able to confirm this, but it was predictable that he would be the fastest in terms of pace. Senna was also in great spirits throughout the weekend, and we had a clear idea for the race: all-in in the first three laps and, if he's in the lead, pull away. But that only works if there's no traffic. Nevertheless, hats off to him, he mastered it with flying colours. It was truly incredible what he achieved this weekend, and all in front of his home crowd and at the LIQUI MOLY Grand Prix. Everything just fell into place. We are also very happy for our main partner."

"For Manu, the weekend got off to a less-than-ideal start. However, he quickly got back on track and secured a place on the front row of the grid in qualifying. So, the starting position was obviously great, because starting from the front is always good. How he managed to do that, and the same goes for Senna, was a really strong performance, as neither of them were given anything for free. In any case, we had also hopes for Manu today, even though we knew he didn't have the same pace as Senna. Nevertheless, we were confident that he could keep up with the front runners, which he did for most of the race. But with all the battles, it's always difficult. In the end, his tyre simply had a bit more drop than we would have liked. However, that was due to the many battles for positions. However, we continue to lead the championship although, we knew from the start that Phillip Island would not be a walk in the park for Manu. We are very optimistic for the next races that we will be at the front with Manu until the end."
