Gonzalez strengthens World Championship lead with podium in Brno - Agius fights for last point
With a commanding third place in the twelfth Moto2 race of the season in Brno, Manuel Gonzalez secured his eighth podium of the season and thus continues to defend his overall lead in the World Championship and now starts the four-week summer break with a solid 25-point lead over Aron Canet. Senna Agius, on the other hand, had to fight harder to secure a championship point with 15th place.
Manuel Gonzalez got off to an outstanding start on the 5.4-kilometre circuit from fourth position, turning into second place on the first corner and then maintaining third place. Although he was able to keep up with Barry Baltus and Joe Roberts in the opening laps, the Spaniard had to pull away somewhat from the middle of the race. His attempts to find more speed by making personal adjustments during the race failed to produce any noticeable improvements.
The weekend and especially the race were more challenging for team-mate Senna Agius. The Australian started from sixth place on the second row, but lost several positions in the first few laps and dropped back to twelfth place. As the race progressed, he was unable to stop the downward trend and had to fight hard until the end to take home a championship point in 15th place. After Agius was unable to match the performance of the previous days over the entire distance, the 20-year-old is going into the upcoming summer as seventh of the World Championship. The focus is already on the next race at the Red Bull Ring, where he wants to play to his strengths again.
Before the team starts its well-deserved summer break, a one-day test is scheduled in Brno, where the entire German racing team, including Moto3, wants to gain valuable insights for the remaining ten races of the season.
