LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP: Local hero Gonzalez secures strong top-four finish in Barcelona

In front of his home crowd, LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP rider Manuel Gonzalez did everything he could to further extend his World Championship lead. The Spaniard took a fantastic result with fourth place, while his teammate Senna Agius remained outside the points in 18th place after a long-lap penalty and a dramatic final phase.

There were 21 laps to complete at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on this cloudy race Sunday and after a difficult qualifying session, Manuel Gonzalez started from tenth place, but got off to a flying start. Cheered on by his compatriots, the local hero catapulted himself forward by an incredible seven positions in just the first corner. As the race progressed, the 23-year-old had to let a few top riders pass him and settled into fifth place. There he fought a close duel with Guevara, repeatedly launching attacks. Fans witnessed a thrilling head-and-head race, which Gonzalez ultimately won in fourth place, securing 13 important World Championship points. This extended his lead in the championship to 38 points ahead of Aron Canet, who crashed out, ahead of the 16th of a total of 22 races this season.

Senna Agius was less fortunate. The Australian had a turbulent start and fell back from eighth to 14th place. As the race progressed, he exceeded the track limits once too often due to grip problems and had to serve a long lap penalty, which threw him back from 11th to 14th place once more. He continued to lose ground in the final laps and ultimately crossed the finish line in eighteenth place.

The next opportunity to collect valuable points is just a week away: the next race of the season is scheduled for 12th to 14th September at the Misano World Circuit.

"Ultimately, I did exactly what I wanted to do: conserve the tyres as much as possible and attack towards the end. However, I lost a lot of time battling with Izan. As long as my rivals were behind me, I didn't want to push beyond the limit. I tried to overtake him, but it wasn't easy and cost me time. In the end, I still managed to get past him. I would have liked to have finished on the podium, it wasn't far off, but the riders in front of me were very fast and I found it a bit difficult to get used to the bike today. But I'm happy because finishing fourth and pulling out a lead over my rivals is really very, very good in such a difficult situation."

"There isn't much to say today because it was a really bad race for us. From lap five onwards, I had absolutely no grip. Riding without grip in a long race like here in Barcelona was a disastrous feeling. I couldn't open the throttle and was just coasting through the middle of the corners. We now need to analyse why that was the case. My long runs with the pace on used tyres were much better throughout the weekend, and I had expected to be fighting for the top places today. So we were very unlucky, but hopefully we can make up for it next week in Misano."

"Hats off to Manu's performance. Yesterday's qualifying wasn't ideal and he had to start from the fourth row. But after three or four corners, he was already in third place. His start was really strong and he did a very clever job in the first few laps. Unfortunately, he then got involved in a few battles that we didn't need, because our plan was to save the tyres. But in battles, the opposite always happens. Nevertheless, he managed the tyres well.
The fact that our closest rivals in the title fight made mistakes helped us extend our lead in the World Championship. That's important because the championship is already in the final third of the season, where you can't afford to make any more mistakes. If you can't finish on the podium or win, then you have to score as many points as possible. In that respect, Manu got the maximum out of it today. That's why I congratulate him on this achievement. Especially since it's no easy feat to be so mentally strong and stay calm at this stage. He proved his class and the whole team did a good job."

"Senna made a very good comeback at the weekend, because starting from the second row after an injury break is no mean feat. This put him in a top starting position for the race. Barcelona is a track that suits him. He generally finds it a little easier on tracks that offer less grip. That's why we had high hopes that he would achieve a top result today. It would have been possible, but unfortunately a few things got in the way, including a long-lap penalty. But overall, his performance was much better than the result reflects. We'll take it as it is, even though it's a shame he couldn't finish in the points. Senna will certainly do a bit better next week, and then things will look very different again."
