David Muñoz gives Intact GP a phenomenal home win at the Sachsenring
The German LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP team experienced an unforgettable race Sunday at the Sachsenring: David Muñoz brought his team home victory in the eleventh race of the season with a spectacular finish in front of an almost sold-out grandstand. Team-mate Guido Pini rounded off the strong team result with an excellent seventh place.
The Grand Prix at the tradition-steeped Sachsenring turned out to be a real summer fairytale for the local Intact GP team. After David Muñoz narrowly missed out on victory in Assen a fortnight ago, the 19-year-old Spaniard left nothing to chance this time. Starting from fourth on the grid, Muñoz started a spirited overtaking manoeuvre in the very first corner that catapulted him straight into second position. A brief moment later, he took the lead and held his own in a thrilling 15-strong leading field. The race turned into a real thriller: the battle for victory came to a peak in the final laps. Muñoz entered the final lap in the lead, but was beaten shortly afterwards by Jose Antonio Rueda. However, Muñoz countered with a courageous attack on the last corner and secured a well-deserved second win of the season to the thunderous applause of the fans - and with it a leap to fifth place in the overall world championship standings.
Moto3 rookie Guido Pini also impressed throughout the weekend with a strong performance in changeable conditions. In the wet qualifying session on Saturday, the 17-year-old Italian took an impressive third place on the grid. On race Sunday, he once again held his own in the leading group on a dry track, fought his way back after a difficult start and crossed the finish line of the 3.67-kilometre Sachsenring in a strong seventh place. Pini thus secured another nine championship points and travels with a tailwind to the next Grand Prix in Brno, Czech Republic, which takes place from 18th to 20th July.
