David Muñoz claims maiden victory in the Moto3 thriller at Aragon

In his 58th World Championship race, David Muñoz of the LIQUI MOLY Intact GP Team managed to break free. In a thrilling 17-lap race, the Spaniard utilised the power of his KTM and secured his first victory in the Moto3 World Championship. His team-mate Guido Pini narrowly missed out on the points in 19th place despite a strong fight for positions.

David Muñoz didn't expect that the Aragon Grand Prix would turn into his personal Sunday fairytale. Starting the race from ninth on the grid, the 18-year-old Spaniard fought his way up to fourth place within just the first few corners. He then moved consistently into the top four, even leading the race at times. The final laps of the eighth race of the season turned out to be a real slipstream thriller: Munoz, who went into the final lap in second place, kept Maximo Quiles' rear in sights. In the final corner, the Intact GP rider overtook his compatriot and rookie Quiles with a courageous manoeuvre on the inside line and ultimately crossed the finish line with a lead of 0.050 seconds. He thus celebrated his first ever Grand Prix victory and moved up from 15th to 10th place in the overall standings thanks to the 25 well-deserved world championship points.

Team-mate Guido Pini fought his way forward from 21st on the grid, made significant gains early on in the race and was in 14th place halfway through - right in the points. After two small mistakes, however, he lost touch and dropped back. In the end, Pini crossed the finish line in 19th place. The 17-year-old is now concentrating on his recovery after the hard Friday crash, which has left him feeling not quite fit, and is already looking forward to his home race in Mugello from the 20th to 22nd of June, where he wants to show his full potential again.

"I'm over the moon because it's a very nice day for me and my team. I'm also very happy that I won the race, my first victory in the World Championship. The victory came at just the right time after a difficult start to the season. It wasn't always easy but now I've gained a lot of confidence. On the penultimate lap, I saw a place where I could give it a go and so I tried it there on the last corner. It was a bit tight, but it worked out well. Many thanks to the team for their work and constant help, and also to my family."

"I had to start from very far back today, which was a bit unusual. But I tried to push as hard as possible on the first few laps. I think I recovered well and was able to catch up with the front group. Later on, however, I made two mistakes that caused me to lose contact with the group. I had a bad crash this weekend and afterwards I didn't feel so good, mainly because of a sore body. On the other hand, the feeling with the bike was good. It was more down to me, because I wasn't 100 percent ready. But we know our potential, as we showed on Friday morning when we were really fast. The next race is Mugello, my home race, which I'm really looking forward to. In two weeks, we will do our best again to show our true potential."

"Before I get to the good news from today, I would like to start a little further ahead because practice sessions were very difficult for both riders, although the potential and competitiveness were there. But both riders suffered from a crash. Guido was struggling on Saturday and couldn't confirm his strong performance from Friday. On the other side of our pit, David was able to finish ninth on the grid despite a crash in qualifying, which is a good starting position in Moto3."

"David performed sensationally in today's race. He managed it himself well and also rode strategically well. In the end, he was able to play this to his strengths. We are very happy for him with his first, well-deserved victory - congratulations! But also, Guido showed his potential with very strong lap times. He was already close to get into the top ten, but unfortunately, he made small mistakes and his tyre wear was higher than expected, which set him back. Nevertheless, it was a good performance that he made it to the finish. That gives us hope that he will do better at his home race in Mugello in two weeks' time. For now, we are happy about our first win of the year, which is a great relief for the whole team. But above all for David, who has long deserved this triumph. The work we are investing in our two drivers is increasingly paying off. This is shown by the results we will soon see from Guido as well."
