Bitter double setback for Intact GP in Spielberg

The race Sunday at the Red Bull Ring in Austria brought two bitter setbacks for the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP Team. After an early crash by Senna Agius, Manuel Gonzalez also had to retire from the race early due to a stone hitting his radiator.

At the start of the 13th race of the season, Senna Agius got off to a good start from sixth place, but was involved in a violent collision with Ivan Ortola and Alonso Lopez in turn 2. The 20-year-old Australian was even run over, but was very lucky to escape without serious injury. After initial scans of his hand and head at the Red Bull Ring Medical Centre, Agius was taken to the nearby hospital in Judenburg for further examination. On Monday, the Aussie will undergo additional tests in Barcelona.

Meanwhile, teammate Manuel Gonzalez tried to keep the team colours flying high. The 23-year-old slotted into third place after the start. He remained calm and followed Moreira and Holgado closely, but then his Kalex suddenly lost power. Although Gonzalez was able to make up a few places after briefly dropping back to P14, his bike's performance finally collapsed on lap six. The reason was a stone chip on the radiator, which caused all the coolant to leak and threatened to overheat the engine – an early exit was inevitable. Despite the retirement, Gonzalez lost only six points in the World Championship standings to his closest rival Aron Canet, who remains 19 points behind him.

Even though the race weekend ended disappointingly for Intact GP, both riders showed promising pace. With renewed courage and – in Agius' case, hopefully a full recovery – the team is looking to attack again at the Hungarian Grand Prix at the new Balaton Park Circuit in a week's time.

"It's a shame because we were really strong today. In the first few laps, I rode calmly behind Vietti, waited and got adapted to the track, as it had changed a bit compared to yesterday. I was just waiting to start overtaking. Moreira tried to pull away, but his pace wasn't particularly impressive. Maybe we could have fought with him for the win. But then we had bad luck with Senna's crash at the exit of the chicane, because after that the track was full of gravel that wasn't properly cleaned. When I passed there two laps later, a rider in front of me kicked up a stone that hit the radiator. This caused a lot of water to leak out. I tried to keep going and finish the race because the water had stopped leaking, but suddenly a lot of water came out again. So, I had to stop to avoid damage to the engine and a crash. Of course, it's hard to accept because we were really strong. But we have to look at the positives after what was not an easy weekend for us."

"We had an incredible weekend here in Styria leading up to the Moto2 race. Our riders performed very strongly in all classes. Unfortunately, things didn't go as we had hoped in the Moto2 race for our team here at the Red Bull Ring. Senna crashed through no fault of his own and hit his head quite hard. The most important thing is that he is conscious and doing well so far. We hope he recovers as quickly as possible, because the next race is already in a week. The irony of the situation is that Manu picked up a stone from Senna's crash, which damaged the radiator and forced him to retire from the race. Even though something like this happens very rarely, it's still annoying. So, we have to take the positives, because it could have been worse. Senna is doing well under the circumstances and hopefully he will be able to ride again soon. Manu, on the other hand, had a strong pace and nothing is lost yet due to the retirement. We continue to lead the championship. Hopefully luck will be on our side again next weekend. But sometimes you can't control everything. Nevertheless, it must be said that our guys are doing an incredibly good job and are very competitive."
