Wild final sprint at the Red Bull Ring: Muñoz takes podium spot, Pini in the Top10

Pure excitement at the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring: David Muñoz from the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP team fought his way back to finish in a sensational third place, securing not only his sixth podium finish of the season but also the third place in the world championship. Rookie teammate Guido Pini rounded off the strong team result with ninth place.

In bright sunshine, the Moto3 class started its 13th race of the season right on time at 11 a.m. Starting from 14th on the grid, David Muñoz had a difficult starting position, as overtaking manoeuvres are particularly challenging on the narrow, 4.35 km long stop-and-go track. But the 19-year-old Spaniard proved his determination. He initially established himself in the chasing group, while the leading trio pulled away slightly. However, the gap of more than two seconds continued to shrink towards the end of the race. Muñoz positioned himself for the showdown with a clever attack: He started the penultimate lap in fifth place and even pushed his way up to second place with a courageous manoeuvre. In the final lap, he was narrowly beaten by Ryusei Yamanaka, but secured valuable 16 points with a strong third place – and with it, third place in the World Championship standings, which he intends to defend next week at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Teammate Guido Pini started the Austrian Grand Prix from 11th on the grid. The 17-year-old Italian stayed with the chasing pack from the start, held his own in intense wheel-to-wheel battles and secured ninth place, his seventh points finish of his rookie season. This added another seven points to his World Championship account. In the upcoming race in Hungary, Pini intends to continue his attack at the new Balaton Park circuit, which is still unfamiliar to him – also with the aim to keep reducing the 25-point gap to third place in the team standings for his German Intact GP team.

"It was a very difficult race, especially because the first group was so strong. But lap after lap, I pushed myself to my limits. Fortunately, we finished third in the end, which is very important for us. So, I'm very happy to start like this after the summer break. Especially because it was a difficult weekend for me and the team, with some problems and a crash in FP1, which limited our track time on Friday quite a bit. But I'm also happy with the work we did as a team, because we improved over the weekend, which will hopefully help us next week. I really gave it my all on the last lap because I wanted to be on top of the podium. But when Furusato overtook me in turn seven, it was difficult to catch up with him and Yamanaka on the following straight again. Nevertheless, I'm also happy with third place. Hungary is a new track for all Moto3 teams and riders. But it seems to be an interesting one. Many thanks to the team and all the sponsors and guests who visited us here."

"It was a very fast race and the high pace made overtaking difficult. But starting in the pack is no easy task either. However, we were close to the leading group in terms of the gap all the time, which is really positive. So, we just need a little bit more to achieve great results. Balaton Park is new to everyone, and I think we can be fast there. Let's see how it goes on Friday, but in any case, we should be able to enjoy this new track for us in a week's time."

"We can be very satisfied with today's results, especially considering the less-than-ideal practice session we had here in Spielberg. Although David was initially behind, he caught up with the leading group in the penultimate lap and finished third place, securing his fifth podium finish in the last six races. This moved him up to third place in the overall standings. Guido also put in a strong performance and finished ninth, just two seconds behind the winner. In my opinion, he performed better today than he did in the last race before the summer break in Brno. We want to continue at this level in Hungary, where the next Grand Prix will take place in a week's time on a track that is new to everyone. We are confident that our two young riders will master this task with flying colours."
