David Almansa tops perfect weekend with sensational victory
The 20-year-old Spaniard prevailed in the opening race in an exciting battle decided by thousandths of a second, while David Muñoz was only able to keep up with the first chasing group during the early stages.
David Almansa immediately proved to be a fortunate choice for second place alongside his compatriot David Muñoz in the Memmingen based team. Starting from pole position, Almansa set the pace at the front throughout the race.
In the final corner before the checkered flag, his only rival, Spaniard Maximo Quiles, attempted an attack. However, Almansa had the better momentum on the final meters to the line and celebrated his maiden Grand Prix victory by a razor-thin margin of 0.003 seconds.
David Muñoz, on the other hand, struggled with the long and gruelling distance in temperatures around 34 degrees Celsius. After a good start from sixth place, Munoz battled in the top five in the first third of the race before finally crossing the finish line in tenth place. Considering that Munoz had to undergo another operation on his left leg the week before leaving for Thailand, this performance cannot be praised highly enough.
There is a break of just under three weeks until the Brazilian Grand Prix.
