Senna Agius spectacular victorious in Texas
The Australian rider in LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP made an impressive comeback at the third Grand Prix of the season, while Manuel Gonzalez reclaimed the championship lead with a fifth-place finish.
This weekend’s United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas — arguably the most challenging track on the calendar — will go down in history for the team from Memmingen in the Allgäu region.
Senna Agius was deeply affected by the loss of his mechanic Roberto Lunadei. After a difficult week in Brazil, he returned to form in Texas and was back at the top of the highly competitive Moto2 class as early as Friday’s first free practice session, finishing the session in fourth place.
And so, Agius continued his weekend in Austin. After finishing fifth in Friday afternoon’s Practice session, he made it directly into Q2, where he, however, was unable to fully showcase his speed—he finished qualifying in sixth place, securing a good starting position on the second row. On the final grid, he moved up one spot.
The race had to be stopped after a crash in the first corner at the start. After the restart, Agius finished the first lap in third place, gained another position on the second lap, and finally took the lead on lap three, which he defended against Celestino Vietti until the finish. After two unfortunate races in Thailand and Brazil, Agius’s third Grand Prix victory catapulted him to sixth place in the points standings.
On the other side in LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP’s garage, Manuel Gonzalez also delivered consistently strong performances. Like his teammate, the Spanish rider was among the frontrunners on Friday. A fifth place in FP1 was followed by second place in all-important Practice, which was confirmed by fourth place in Free Practice two on Saturday morning. Starting from ninth place on the third row of the grid, Gonzalez got off to a good start, immediately gaining three positions, but then temporarily fell back a bit. Lacking confidence in his race bike, he managed to climb up to fifth place in the race, which was shortened to ten laps after the red flag.
Thanks to its strong performances in the U.S., the team will head to the next Grand Prix in Spain at the end of April as the leader in both the riders' and constructors' championships.
