Guido Pini achieves best career result in Jerez, Muñoz pursued by bad luck
After a strong qualifying, the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP team was all set for a successful race day at the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuito de Jerez - Ángel Nieto. But while Guido Pini achieved his best result in the world championship so far with an outstanding seventh place and scored points for the third time in a row, team-mate David Muñoz had to experience a bitter race after a crash through no fault of his own.
Guido Pini got off to an excellent start in what was only his fifth Moto3 World Championship race. Starting from twelfth place, the 17-year-old Italian showed an impressive pace, working his way forwards lap by lap and courageously staying in the leading group for a long time. In the battle against established rivals for the top four, he had to let the front runners go, but after 19 intense race laps he held on to seventh place on the traditional 4.42 km long circuit in Jerez. This also made Pini the best rookie of the day. The nine points he scored catapulted him from 16th to 13th in the championship standings.
Local hero David Muñoz also had a promising start to the weekend with a strong third place in qualifying. However, a subsequent grid penalty dropped the 18-year-old from the front row to the back of the field in 26th position. Despite a good start, Muñoz got caught up in a hectic group and showed great fighting spirit as he made up several places within just a few corners. However, on the very first lap, he was brought down by two other riders in turn 6 through no fault of his own. In front of his home fans, Muñoz immediately rejoined the race, but had to park his bike for good on lap nine. Despite the disappointment, the Spaniard remains focused and is already looking forward to the next race, which will take place from the 9th to 11th of May in Le Mans, France.
