Gonzalez celebrates fourth win of the season at Mugello, Agius with strong fightback

Manuel Gonzalez from the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP Team once again demonstrated his exceptional class: With a brilliant race at the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello and a lead of 1.409 seconds, the Spaniard celebrated his fourth win of the season and thus made a clear statement in the Moto2 World Championship. His Australian team-mate Senna Agius also scored valuable championship points after a stubborn battle for position and finished the race in 13th place.

Despite starting from eighth position on the third row, Manuel Gonzalez, who was also considered one of the top favourites in the run-up to the race, was not slowed down. The race on the spectacular 5.25-kilometre circuit in the middle of the Tuscan hills was extremely physically demanding for the riders. Nevertheless, the Kalex rider managed to move into the top three on the very first lap and continued his advance from there. After the middle of the race, he finally took the lead and continuously extended his advantage over Albert Arenas. With this victory, Gonzalez regained the sole championship lead and is now nine points ahead of Aron Canet.

Senna Agius initially had to contend with difficulties this weekend. Dropping back from 17th on the grid, he lost further places due to turbulent rampage in the early stages. However, the Australian once again showed his determination and fought his way up ten positions with strong overtaking manoeuvres.

The performances of Manuel Gonzalez and Senna Agius at the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello ensured that the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP Team is now only five points off the top in the Team World Championship. The pair will be back on track in a week's time at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands, the legendary Dutch TT, and will be looking to fight for top positions once again.

"After our last victory in Le Mans, we are now back on top of the podium. I'm very happy about that. But we are always in a position to fight for victory, even if luck wasn't always on our side, which we sometimes needed. Today, however, it was a more difficult race and I'm glad it went the way it did because it allowed me to show what I'm capable of on a really difficult track and in difficult physical conditions. I was struggling physically because after Aragón it was a busy time for me with the MotoGP test followed by our Moto2 test in Barcelona. So, I wasn't able to recover as well as I would have liked. But this win at this track is super important for us because it's like starting from zero, like in Thailand and now we are leading the championship again. Nevertheless, we have to use our head, even if we are the strongest in terms of speed today. We go into the next race with the same goals. Thanks to the team for their great job."

"My race began with a really bad start and then I was pushed wide by another rider. So, I dropped back to P23 or P24 on the first lap. Then I just tried to make up as many positions as possible until the end. Our pace wasn't bad, but the position doesn't reflect the step we made today. We have to work on qualifying, that was the big problem this weekend and it cost us a better result today. I can be a little bit satisfied with the pace at Mugello, but we will start again at Assen where we will try to get back to a normal position."

"Congratulations to Manu, that was another extremely strong performance. After the penalty from qualifying, he had to start from the third row, and then to manage the tyres so well that it lasted until the end deserves the utmost respect. We knew that Manu's pace was better than that of his opponents. But we also knew that it would be difficult with the tyre wear if he didn't get away at the front right away. Fortunately, he got off to a good start and was right there. He managed it perfectly right to the end, even though he said afterwards that it was a bit more difficult than he thought. In any case, he had more reserves than the others in the final stages and was therefore able to control everything and finish the race with confidence. Congratulations again and I'm also delighted for the whole team, who did a great job at the weekend. It was really difficult, so it's all the better to finish the weekend like this. Many thanks to everyone for their efforts."

"However, it was a shame for Senna that he lost so many positions at the start because he was pushed wide at one point. But when you have to start from the back of the midfield, it's always difficult. It's much more chaotic there than at the front, but we know that. Nevertheless, we feel sorry for him, because his pace would have been enough for a top five position today. But if you're not good from the start, it's all the more difficult to get to the front in this class. Nevertheless, Senna did a good race, and the most important thing is that he can leave here with a good feeling. It was very difficult for him on Saturday, he didn't feel comfortable at all, which was the opposite today. That's also very important for next week. His position today is not nearly as good as his performance. His lap times, on the other hand, were very strong. That's why we will continue with him and make sure that we are further up the grid with him in Assen."
