Jakob Rosenthaler shines with first top ten in Misano

At the guest apperiance of the Junior World Championship at this weekend’s Gran Premio di San Marino, LIQUI MOLY Intact GP Junior Team left a strong impression with its young Upper Austrian rider while Philipp Tonn only got into better swing in the race.

The fifth race weekend of the series took place at the Misano circuit near Rimini in Italy. However, only the Moto3 category was at the start. For the ambitious young racers, it was a special experience to be at the same track as their great idols for a weekend.

In a schedule compressed into two days, there was only one free practice session before qualifying sessions directly started on Friday afternoon. This was a tough change in the schedule not only for Jakob Rosenthaler and Philipp Tonn. Apparently Rosenthaler had less problems with this, however, because he started the weekend in 16th place after free practice and ignited a further increase in performance in each of the two qualifying sessions. In QP2, he improved his lap time by more than a second and ended up in 13th place in the combined timesheet, moving up to P12 on the fourth row of the grid due to another rider's demotion. In the race, Rosenthaler fought for a place in the top-10 right from the start. Two laps before the end, he got serious and secured tenth place.

Team-mate Phillip Tonn from Mattstedt experienced a less pleasing weekend close to the Adriatic coast with difficult practice sessions. It wasn't until the race that he found his feet better before a penalty disrupted his rhythm, which meant a prematurely retirement due to a crash shortly before the end of the 17-lap distance.

The series returns to its usual format with JuniorGP™ Moto3, Moto2™ European Championship and European Talent Cup at the next stop in five weeks' time at Spain's MotorLand Aragón circuit.

"As it was to be expected, this compact race weekend demanded a lot from us. This applies not only to our young drivers, but to the entire crew. A big thank you to the team for the perfect preparation for this event. Without this, it might have been difficult. Nevertheless, it was a special experience to have been present at a motorcycle Grand Prix in this way. We quickly adjusted to this unusual schedule and got off to a good start. From a sporting point of view, Jakob performed outstanding. We knew that he had a better pace. Nevertheless, we were very pleased that he was able to develop so positively during Friday’s practice sessions, which ended with a well-deserved twelfth place on the grid. After this excellent qualifying performance, he rounded off the weekend with an even stronger race. Tenth place in the race is a great result for our young team."

"Congratulations to Jakob, it was a pleasure to watch him working on and off track. It would be really nice if he could maintain this level of performance until the end of the season and if possible, even improve it a bit. Philipp, on the other hand, had problems from the beginning. He never got into a flow. So, it was not surprising that he ended up in 26th spot for the grid. But in the race, he suddenly rediscovered his fighting spirit. At least in the early stages he impressed with and steadily worked his way up into the points. However, the error rate was too high, which led to a "long lap penalty". Nevertheless, this race showed that he lacks the pace to consistently stay close to the points. So, until Aragon he still has some homework to do to get back to where he was before."

"I am super happy, of course. Misano was a great weekend for us in every respect from start to finish. It started with a good free practice; we quickly found a suitable rhythm. The first qualifying was also good, while the second was even stronger and further increased the ambition. From twelfth on the grid, I went into the race very motivated. I'm most pleased with the first laps, in which I improved a lot compared to the previous races, as I rather made up positions than losing."

"After that, I rode in a group with two other riders. The gap to the leading group was about three or four seconds. It was a great battle to be on the absolute limit every lap. I am very satisfied with my performance and happy about my first top-10 in this championship. A big thank you to all my partners, especially the Intact team and my crew, because despite the more complicated weekend, everything worked perfectly."
