Agius & Gonzalez seal front row start in Australia

The two LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP riders Senna Agius and Manuel Gonzalez put in an outstanding qualifying performance at the picturesque Phillip Island Circuit in Australia. Local hero Agius stormed to second place on the grid with Spanish teammate Gonzalez completing the front row alongside him in P3.

One year after his Moto2 debut podium, Senna Agius is once again on course for a top result in front of his home crowd at the LIQUI MOLY Australian Grand Prix. The 20-year-old was among the frontrunners right from the start: he improved from fourth place in FP1 to second in Friday afternoon’s Practice session, securing a direct entry into Q2. Agius stepped up his game once again in qualifying today, securing second place on the grid just 0.011 seconds behind pole-setter Diogo Moreira.

World championship leader Manuel Gonzalez was in no way inferior to his teammate: he rounded off the team’s strong performance with third place, just 0.076 seconds off pole position. The Spanish rider will therefore start the 19th race of the season from third position and aims to collect as many world championship points as possible in order to further extend his nine-point lead. The 23-year-old had to cope with two crashes on Friday but fortunately remained uninjured. With four Grand Prix races still to go, the title fight is still open – but the experienced Intact GP rider is confident in his racing strength to travel to Malaysia as World Championship leader.

Due to expected strong gusts of wind, Sunday’s 23-lap race will be postponed by one hour and will therefore start at 1:15 p.m. local time (4:15 a.m. CET).

"I'm very happy to be on the front row of the grid. I felt really good today and set my fastest lap time of the weekend without slipstreaming. That's very important because slipstreaming can easily make other riders a bit faster, especially in sector four. However, I felt very comfortable with the bike and always gave my best. Above all, we did a lot of work this weekend to be ready for the race. That's why we're staying calm and trying to do our job on Sunday. I will definitely give everything to win my home Grand Prix tomorrow. We just need a good start and have to try to stay on the podium and fight for it."

"It was the most difficult qualifying session of the season. I was able to put in a good lap by following other riders, even though I had a few difficult moments in my first run. That's why I went into the pits, because I wanted to make some changes to the bike. It was really difficult to ride. After changing the tyres, it was completely different; the bike was better, even though I struggled with rear movements in some corners. But we tried to deal with it and achieved our goal of being on the front row of the grid. It's true, however, that many riders don't look behind them when leaving the pit lane, which always leads to dangerous situations. That's something to keep in mind. Even though I lost a lap because of it, I was able to do another good lap. So, I'm happy with today's result."

"The race will be very long, and it won't be easy. It will be difficult to break away, so we will try to get off to a good start, then stay behind the leader and try to fight. Nevertheless, I'm not worried; we just need to prepare ourselves mentally as best we can for tomorrow's task. Apart from that, I hope we can race tomorrow at all, because I remember that two years ago it was very dangerous due to the strong winds. I hope it will be less windy tomorrow. So, if we can get out on track, that's good. But first and foremost, safety is the most important thing."
