Double misfortune for the LIQUI MOLY Intact GP team in Aragon

Sunday's race in Aragon, unfortunately, came to an early end for Marcel Schrötter and Jeremy Alcoba of the LIQUI MOLY Intact GP team after just a few corners, after both crashed shortly after the start of the 15th race of the season, but luckily escaped injury.

In the morning warm-up, the German Marcel Schrötter finished in eleventh place, which raised hopes for the 21-lap race after he qualified in a less than satisfactory 22nd place on Saturday. However, the fact that the race would then end in the gravel for the 29-year-old after just two corners was not to be expected. Unfortunately, with the lost points he slipped from the eighth position in the world championship to 10th, but there are still five races left to make up for the lost points.

The exact same fate befell LIQUI MOLY Intact GP teammate Jeremy Alcoba just a little later, who also buried his home race in the gravel at MotorLand Aragon. A bitter pill for the young Spaniard, who wanted to give his fans another brilliant catch up race. And he was well on his way to converting his 27th place on the grid into further World Championship points because with a rocket start the Moto2 rookie catapulted himself to 16th place after just one lap and was thus within striking distance of the points. But then, in turn 12, all hope was gone. While trying to leave Manuel Gonzales behind him and not lose the connection to Celestino Vietti, he slipped and ended the race irrevocably for himself.

In just one week's time, the two riders of the German racing team will resume formation when the final overseas stage opens in Motegi, Japan.

"These are the dangerous moments that quickly arise when you are so far behind. We have been in a similar situation several times this year, but it has always worked out well. Unfortunately, my start was not ideal today, so I was not in the attacking position I had imagined. Despite all that, it was a stupid chain reaction in the end. There was a crash at the front, whereupon everyone somehow tries to avoid someone else and so you start braking exactly in the acceleration phase between the two corners. Then, when you're far back, you don't see it as quickly as you would need to react, especially when you're right behind another rider and you are set to overtake. It's a shame because we really made a step this morning. It was the first session where we felt good and that was with no new tyres. We were much closer than the rest of the weekend and I really felt comfortable with the bike straight away. I was super motivated, especially as the situation has not been easy lately. I was in good spirits because I didn't have much to lose in the race. In such races, you can go all-in and I thought we could have a good race today. Unfortunately, it was over very quickly. I hope we can take the step and the new feeling with us to Japan. I want to make the most of every race and finish the season well."

"The weekend and the feeling with the bike weren't any good but finally, the race is what matters and that's when you really need to fight against your opponents. I was confident after I told myself that I need to do the best that I can. The other times I wasn't quite as far back as today and it looked kind of undoable. Before the start, I put in my mind that I need to take all the risks in the first few corners and it worked out really well for me. I had a great start, took all the risk on the brakes, and passed about twelve riders within the first lap. I saw Vietti in front of me and knowing that he came from further back than me, I realized that he was faster which is why I wanted to follow him. I tried to see where to pass Gonzales several times, because I didn't want to crash, so I took it easy. But then when I went on the brakes harder, I crashed and at first, I didn't realize I touched him. When I saw him in the gravel too, I wanted to apologize because even though it was my fault, it was clearly not my intention even if I went in all or nothing. Still, I want to apologize to him for ruining his race too."

"Today's result is unfortunately somewhat indicative of this whole weekend. Friday was pretty bad and we definitely have to start improving this at this point and get better. Marcel then did a good job in Q1, but it came too late because we need to be a step further on Friday already. Today they both felt good in the race, so it's all the more regrettable that they both crashed out. These things happen, but it is a pity and not a nice ending. We urgently need to do more on Friday and then we will have a good chance of a better starting position on Saturday, which will help us on Sunday to use our pace in the race and not get involved in situations like today. After all, I am glad that they didn't hurt themselves in any way so that they can attack again in one week's time in Japan."
