Dominique Aegerter ends glorious MotoE season with P4 in final race

One day after winning the MotoE title, Dominique Aegerter and his Dynavolt Intact GP crew had to fight one last time for victory in the final race at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. As always, the best MotoE riders in the world put up a fierce fight, which ended in fourth place for the Swiss rider after a near collision.

There was not much at stake, but Dominique Aegerter would not be the 2022 World Cup winner if he had not fought once again in the season finale as if the title decision was still to be made.

The start, as well as the formation in the first lap, seemed like déjà vu from Saturday, because again it was the Italian Mattia Casadei who grabbed the holeshot from pole setter Aegerter, while Eric Granado took up the chase in third position.

Initially, a thrilling duel developed between Casadei and the 31-year-old Swiss, in which it seemed as if the Dynavolt Intact GP rider could go a tad faster. A brilliant manoeuvre on lap five with a spectacular line choice briefly gave the World Cup winner the lead. But the danger was not yet banned with just under three laps remaining, as the interlude at the front not only brought Granado closer, but also Jordi Torres and last year's Misano winner Matteo Ferrari.
A braking error and a near collision between Casadei and Aegerter on the last lap decided this brilliant fight for victory, in which Matteo Ferrari finally rolled over the line as the winner, closely followed by Mattia Casadei, Eric Granado, and Dominique Aegerter in fourth position.

The finale of this superb MotoE season could hardly have been more exciting. With a lead of 34.5 points, Dominique Aegerter is the new and last reigning FIM Enel MotoE World Cup winner on an Energica bike, because from next season on, the bikes will be supplied by Ducati.

"Of course, I wanted to give the team another victory to finish off the season. I gave absolutely everything in the race and also fought for the win, but it wasn't enough in the end. MotoE is difficult because you only have these eight laps. We were a very tight group of five riders and when I realized that, I tried to attack Casadei so that I would be in front for the last lap and nobody could overtake me. Unfortunately, I then made a mistake and had to open up in turn 2 in order to avoid touching Casadei. That cost me not only the win but the podium in general. Of course, I'm disappointed with this fourth place in the season finale because I would have had what it takes to win. But in the end, winning the title yesterday was our most important mission this weekend. We are the champions, the Cup winners and that is what our goal was. Today, of course, it felt very different than usual. The pressure was different, but the team did a great job again for the last race. My bike felt really good, so a big thanks to everyone who helped make it happen. We delivered a perfect season, we finished every race, never crashed, and the bike was never destroyed. Therefore I was able to do so many burn-outs, which gave the mechanics a lot of cleaning work. *laughs* We were on the podium ten times and the two fourth places were our worst results, so I think we more than deserved the title and we'll celebrate that appropriately tonight."

"I am incredibly relieved that it worked out for Domi at the third attempt after he came so close to taking the title twice. We delivered a flawless season and have been rewarded with the overall cup win. It's just unbelievably great and I'm really happy for him and the team that this title is ours. The crew did a great job all season and this is the highly deserved result. The feeling is indescribable and the race today was of course really exciting again, even though it was different than usual. It was no longer about the title, which makes the conditions different, but Domi gave everything once again to get another good individual result.
