Second row for Gonzalez and fourth row for Agius at Aragón

By securing fourth and tenth on the grid, the two riders from the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP Moto2 team each earned a strong starting position for the 13th race of the season on Sunday at Spain’s MotorLand Aragón circuit.

The weekend in the outback of the country’s eastern coastline got underway on Friday with a fourth-place finish for Senna Agius and a fifth-place finish for points leader Manuel Gonzalez. In the afternoon’s Practice session, Australian Agius once again narrowly edged out his Spanish teammate. With third- and sixth-place finishes, qualifying directly for Q2 was no problem at all.

In Free Practice 2 on Saturday morning, which focused almost exclusively on race preparation, Gonzalez set the fastest time. Agius finished fourth, just a fraction of a second behind. This made the two top riders among the favourites for pole position.

During qualifying, Gonzalez worked his way up to fourth place in his home race, while teammate Agius set a fast lap very early on and then held onto second place for a long time. In his second run, however, the 21-year-old was unable to improve his lap time and dropped back to eleventh place. Due to a grip penalty incurred by another rider, he moves up one position on the starting grid.

The Moto2 race starts at its usual time at 12:15 p.m. CEST.

«Today, on new tires, I was significantly faster than yesterday. To be honest, that really surprised me, so I thought, “Well, maybe I can secure pole position with this.” On the one hand, I’m satisfied with the second row on the grid, but on the other hand, I’m not that satisfied, because in some sectors I wasn’t able to put together a perfect lap. Plus, I was on my own every lap and made a mistake right at the very end. On top of that, there were tiny mistakes in some corners, and those thousandths of a second really add up. Over the course of the day, I improved lap by lap, and I’m sure we’ll be right up there at the front tomorrow. I know there will be a lot of strong riders with good pace tomorrow, which doesn’t worry me too much, but I’m not sure what to expect. Take Alonso López, for example, he can be a tough competitor here and is always a rider who’s hard to pass and beat. So, we need to stay calm. If we make it onto the podium, I’ll be happy, and if we can win, all the better.»

«It was a pretty good day. We did a good job this morning in terms of preparing for the race. I also feel really comfortable with the bike this weekend. Unfortunately, due to a few mistakes on my part in qualifying, we’ll be starting a bit further back than we would have liked, which is a bit of a shame. But we’re very competitive this weekend and will fight our way back to the front in the race. So, I’m very confident that we’ll have a good day tomorrow and score as many points as possible. It was a day of two half’s, but we need to focus on the positives and make the most of it on Sunday.»
