Fifth pole position for Almansa
Great excitement within the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP Moto3 team about David Almansa, who continues to be in top form. After consistently posting the fastest times in all practice sessions, he also proved to have nerves of steel during qualifying and secured pole position at the very last moment. David Gonzalez continues to impress with further progress.
In a qualifying session that David Almansa made even more exciting than it already was, the 20-year-old Spanish rider prevailed thanks to his determination. He had dominated all of the previous practice sessions that weekend and went into the decisive Q2 as the clear favourite for pole position at the Grand Prix of Aragon.
However, Almansa had to abort his first attempt for a fast lap time. After his scheduled pit stop for a tire change, a yellow flag got in the way, causing quite a bit of anxiety. But Almansa managed to cross the finish line just seconds before the end of the session, and he put in a spectacular final lap, securing the decisive gap, measured in hundredths of a second, only in the very last section of the track.
On the other side, in the German team’s garage, David Gonzalez is once again stepping in for his injured compatriot David Muñoz. The 18-year-old Spaniard has justified the trust placed in him by taking another step forward in his learning curve. In Friday afternoon Practice session, Gonzalez missed the direct step for Q2 by a hair’s breadth but underlined his potential with a 16th-place finish in the second free practice session on Saturday morning.
Gonzalez finished Q1 in P2 on the timesheet, which meant he advanced to Q2 in only his second Grand Prix. However, a crash early in the session prevented him from securing a better starting position than 17th for Sunday's race.
The usual schedule is back in effect in Aragón. The Moto3 class will therefore start at 11:00 a.m. CEST.
