Agius finishes fourth, just missing the podium; Gonzalez remains World Championship leader

Both LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt GP Moto2 riders put in a spirited performance in Sunday's race at Aragón and were rewarded with solid results.

Senna Agius staged an impressive comeback after a difficult qualifying session on Saturday. The 21-year-old rider started from the fourth row and gained two or three positions as early as on the first lap. At times, he was the fastest rider out on track and was closing the gap significantly until, in the final stages, his tires started to wear out, preventing him from further reducing the gap to the leading group and thus keeping him out of contention for a podium finish. Considering he started in tenth place; P4 is a strong result for the great talent from Australia.

Overall standings leader Manuel Gonzalez had a tougher race than expected at MotorLand Aragón. Starting from fourth on the grid, he nevertheless fought his way through the race, remained error-free, and secured a solid result with a sixth-place finish. Although the 24-year-old Spaniard wasn’t entirely satisfied with the result, he’s taking away important lessons and, above all, points from the weekend. Since the gaps to the leaders remained small despite the problems, Gonzalez is looking forward with confidence to the upcoming races at tracks that suit him better. With added motivation, he plans to bounce back at Misano.

The next Grand Prix will take place in two weeks in Italy at the Misano World Circuit.

«It was a tough race in which I was able to make up some ground. I got off to a good start, rode pretty aggressively at the beginning, and handled the first part well. That was important because, since I’d to start a bit further back, I had to work a bit harder in the early stages. However, it took me a bit too long to pass the others, especially the Aspar riders, and to close in on the podium group. Midway through the race, I missed the timing a bit, but I gave it my all until both the front and rear tires reached their limits because I’d pushed them too hard in the first half. I’m happy to have finished 4th after starting from 10th, but we have some very clear work ahead of us at Misano. Race pace isn’t a problem, and I’m confident that I can fight for any result. But I still need to figure out how to best exploit the package’s potential over a single lap. In Moto2, it’s extremely important to start from far up the grid. That’s what we’re focusing on now. Compared to yesterday, we bounced back well after a somewhat disappointing day and scored important points for the championship and for the team today. A big thank you to everyone who always gives their all for me. We're highly motivated to finish the year strong. I feel really good with the bike, which is a very positive thing. We'll keep working hard and never give up.»

«It’s true that it was a tougher race than we expected, because yesterday the feelings were still pretty good. Still, we knew Sunday would be difficult, but when I was riding in the pack in the higher temperatures, I didn’t feel comfortable in the corners. I couldn’t handle the bike the way I would have liked. So, I had to fight a bit to stay in the mix and tried to finish the race as well as possible without making any mistakes. Ultimately, 6th place isn’t what we’d hoped for, but we need to focus on the positive aspects we can take away from this. It was the first time we’d had to deal with such issues. Even so, we were still pretty close to the others. It’s a matter of details. Looking ahead to the next races, we have tracks coming up where I feel more comfortable and am stronger. So, we’ll work even harder and return to Misano with even more momentum. Many thanks to the team for their work and support.»

«With Manu, it was clear to us right from the start that it wouldn’t be easy for him here. Still, he surprised us on Saturday morning with the fastest lap time in FP2. But we took that result with a cautious eye. He didn’t feel quite comfortable during the race, especially with the front. We need to investigate exactly what caused that and can’t waste any time, because Misano is coming up in just two weeks.»
