Gonzalez secures important points with P4 – Agius stopped by an electronics problempt

For LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP’s Moto2 team, the Austrian Grand Prix ended with an important fourth-place finish for World Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez. After a difficult spell early in the race, the Spanish rider put in a strong performance and secured valuable points in his campaign for the World Championship. Senna Agius, on the other hand, was forced to retire early due to an electronic issue.

24-year-old Manuel Gonzalez started second on the front row and thus had a clear view on Turn one, where he held his own well. A few hundred meters later, as he entered the chicane, Gonzalez came under pressure from his pursuers. In the scramble shortly after the start, Gonzalez lost a few positions. He then settled into fifth place for a while before working his way up to fourth, a position he ultimately held until the finish.

Gonzalez thus takes home 13 crucial points from Austria. Although his biggest rival, Izan Guevara, won today's race, narrowing Gonzalez’ lead in the overall standings, it remains quite comfortable at 35.5 points.

For Senna Agius, however, things did not go according to plan. Unfortunately, race day ended prematurely for the Australian rider. The 21-year-old had to bring his motorbike into the pits about halfway through the race due to an electronic malfunction and, as a result, once again failed to score any points. Consequently, Agius dropped down one position in the overall standings, lying in fifth place currently.

In two weeks, the Moto2 World Championship will resume with the Japanese Grand Prix. This marks the start of the traditional Asia/Australia tour, during which the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP Team will once again compete for important championship points.

«Today’s race was much tougher than we expected. On Friday and yesterday, we were still setting a really strong pace, but today our pace was slower. That’s why I couldn’t compete for the top spots. I got off to a really good start, but then I started sliding badly in the chicane and a lot of riders passed me. I tried to make up some positions, but I lacked the speed needed to do so. Given these circumstances, we have to view fourth place in a positive light. Of course, we always want more, but we didn’t lose too many points. So, we’ll keep fighting and learn from the tougher races. We’ll try to be right up at the front again in Japan. Before we head overseas, I’d first like to thank the entire team for their tireless efforts.»

«It was a weekend where I felt particularly in good shape and was able to improve my performance. After a good start, I was on pace for the top 8, but then a technical problem arose in lap two. I try to stay as positive as ever, and my first instinct is always to never give up. So, I’m assuming that we’ll all move forward as a group now and understand what’s going on. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve this bad luck lately. But I won’t let it get me down, and I’ll keep fighting to get back to the top.»

«Despite Senna’s minor slip-up in yesterday’s qualifying, we were very confident heading into race day. The pace of the top five was incredibly fast. Manu was right in the thick of it from the start, even though he didn’t feel quite as comfortable with the bike today as he did yesterday. Things looked very good right after the start, because when he has a clear track, he can maintain his pace. Unfortunately, he was attacked hard right at the beginning and lost a few positions as a result. He was subsequently involved in several battles for positions, which allowed Izan Guevara to pull away slightly at the front. That was a bit unfortunate. After a few laps, however, all the riders were running at a similar pace. Manu did a great job and got the most out of the situation with a fourth-place finish today. With an eye on the championship, this was an important result today, and we can be satisfied with it.»
