Almansa spectacular victorious in Silverstone; David Gonzalez scores on his debut

With his second win of the season on Sunday in England, David Almansa ended a long dry spell for himself and the Moto3 squad of the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP team, while substitute rider David Gonzalez demonstrated his talent with a 14th-place finish.

David Almansa made his intentions clear right from the start when, starting from the second row, he decisively surged to the front of the field before turn one. Throughout the 15-lap race, the 20-year-old Spaniard did most of the work at the front of the fierce competition. But it was no walk in the park, as the leading group, which at times included up to six riders, battled for every millimeter on track.

Almansa tried to break away several times but was caught each time. On the second-last lap, however, he timed his move perfectly and built up a 0.7-second lead over second-place finisher Alvaro Carpe by the finish line. With this victory, Almansa moved up to third place in the overall standings.

Eighteen-year-old David Gonzalez, who replaced his injured compatriot David Muñoz this weekend, arrived in England without knowing the track nor having experience competing in at World Championship level. Gonzalez, however, showed a promising learning curve, improving from practice session to practice session and holding his own against far more experienced opponents in the race. His performance was ultimately rewarded with two points.

The championship will continue in three weeks at Spain's MotorLand Aragón circuit.

«It’s a very particular day. I’d even say it’s the most special day of my career, because I’d suffered a lot so far this season. Unfortunately, I’m at a loss for words, and I feel tired because I’m not quite at 100 percent yet. But I’m so happy. First of all, I’d like to thank my family, the team, and all the fans who support me. A special thanks goes to the team, which does an incredible job every time and places its trust in me. Today’s unusual schedule allowed me to watch the other races in their entirety, and I saw that the tires suffered a massive drop in performance. That’s why I tried to conserve them well in the early laps, even though it was a tough battle right from the start. At halfway point of the distance, I started pushing harder to open a gap, but there were strong winds on the back straight and in the fast chicanes. That really made things difficult. But I kept going and gave it my all on the final lap to secure this victory. It was long overdue, so we’re going to celebrate in style today. It was also a very important victory, not just for me, but for the entire team. We have to keep working hard and stay focused, because we’re only halfway through the championship. Next up is Aragón, one of my absolute favourite tracks. So, I'm really looking forward to racing there in three weeks..»

«I’m very happy because I finished my first World Championship race with two points, and I’m also pleased with the work we did throughout the weekend. I felt very comfortable in this environment right from the start. The race itself wasn’t easy for me. From the very first lap, it was a tough battle against more experienced riders like Guido Pini, Jesus Rios, and Casey O’Gorman. As the race went on, they managed to pull ahead of me. But I was able to close that gap before the start of the final lap, which was very exciting for me because I was then able to keep up with them again. In the end, I finished in 14th place, which I’m happy about, and I’m also glad that I was able to score points for the team. After this instructive weekend, I feel better prepared for the next one in Aragón. But first and foremost, I’d like to thank the team for the trust they’ve placed in me and for giving me this opportunity.»

«After Sachsenring, where our team had to return home without any points for the first time this season, because David Almansa was sick and Marcos Uriarte had crashed, this weekend at Silverstone became even more important for the entire team. David Almansa put in an incredible performance after recovering from his illness. He finished the practice sessions in first, sixth, and third place and secured an excellent starting position for the race with fourth on the grid. It was remarkable that he achieved all of this without benefiting from a slipstream, which is an extraordinary feat on this track. During the race, he did most of the work at the front of the pack. That’s why I consider him the strongest rider this weekend. The victory was well-deserved, his second of the season, by the way. Congratulations to him and his crew on this success.»

«David Gonzalez faced a challenging task in his World Championship debut. At this difficult track, which he had never raced before and where, due to its length, only a few laps can be completed during practice sessions, he delivered a very promising performance. Considering that he was still four seconds off the pace on Friday and went on to score his first World Championship points on Sunday with a 14th-place finish, just 0.4 seconds behind 11th place, that was more than we had hoped for. We are therefore very pleased with him and look forward to working with him again in Aragón. A big thank you to the entire team for their tremendous effort; everyone was back in top form right away after the well-deserved summer break.
