Senna Agius on the front row after a nail-biting qualifying
In an extremely dramatic qualifying session, where the top four positions were separated by less than 0.1 seconds, the Australian rider finished third. Manuel Gonzalez, who was considered the clear favourite for pole position, will start Sunday’s race from fourth place on the second row of the grid.
LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP’s Moto2 team picked up right where it left off last Sunday in Tuscany during practice sessions for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez, who had recently secured spectacular victories in Barcelona and Mugello, kicked off the weekend with the fastest time in Friday morning’s free practice one. In Practice, he broke last year’s lap record for the first time and once again finished the session as the fastest rider. The 23-year-old from Madrid then picked up right where he left off on Saturday in the second free practice session — with another lap record and first place. He was determined to repeat this in qualifying, but ultimately finished fourth, just 0.061 seconds behind the pole-setter.
On the other side in the team’s garage, Senna Agius took some time to find his rhythm at the track where he had been forced to sit out a year ago due to injury. Agius improved in every session, not only his position but also in his pace and lap times, which earned him fifth place in Saturday morning’s free practice. His subsequent push for a good starting position for the race ultimately proved successful, as the Australian secured third place on the front row of the grid.
The race on Sunday starts at 12:15 p.m. CEST.
