Double podium in Hungary at 300th Moto2™ Grand Prix

Manuel Gonzalez celebrated his third consecutive victory on Sunday at the Balaton Park Circuit, whilst Senna Agius rounded off the team’s success by finishing third. It was a particularly special triumph, as the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP duo have now gone down in history at the 300th Moto2 Grand Prix.

World Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez is in enviable form. The 23-year-old rider from Madrid quickly put the slight disappointment of his fourth place on the grid from Saturday’s qualifying behind him. At the start of the eighth race of the season, a 22-lap event, he immediately moved up to second place and kept a close eye on the leader, Filip Salac, who had started the race in second place on the front row.

However, Gonzalez had to give his all to keep up with the rider from the Czech Republic. Around halfway point of the race, Gonzalez pulled off the decisive manoeuvre that saw him take the lead, which he held onto until the finish line, emerging a clear win with a 1.5-second lead.

With his fourth win of the season, Gonzalez extended his lead in the overall standings to 49.5 points.

Senna Agius, who had narrowly beaten Gonzalez in qualifying to secure third place on the front row, once again put in a strong and clever performance. Although he lost a position at the start, from the second lap onwards the Australian was the only rider chasing the leading pair. Agius tirelessly tried to minimise the gap to the two leaders, whilst at the same time having to keep David Alonso, who was closing in behind him, at bay. He succeeded, securing third place. This result consolidated Agius’s fourth place in the overall standings.

Following the two races in Italy and Hungary, there is now a short and well-deserved break before the next Grand Prix in the Czech Republic in two weeks’ time.

«I'm absolutely delighted with this win, as it was the toughest race of the season so far. Right from the first lap, I struggled a bit to get the bike up to speed. But I kept my cool and managed to maintain the pace without making any mistakes. During that stage, I tried to learn a thing or two from Filip, as he was really fast in the opening laps. In the end, however, I managed to look after the tyres very well, and I had a slightly better pace than him towards the end of the race. It wasn’t easy to pull that off, though. That makes three wins in a row now, which is a first for me. It’s just incredible, but we need to keep our feet on the ground and carry on in Brno just as we always do: get on with our work from Friday onwards and keep pushing. We’re in strong form at the moment, but in Moto2 the tide can turn very quickly because there are so many fast riders in this class. At every track there’s someone who makes it hard for us to win. It looks easy from the outside, but in reality, it’s the hardest part of the weekend. I think I’ve improved a lot in that respect this season: my mindset is stronger compared to last year. I always wanted to be in first place no matter what, but the result was that I made more mistakes. This season, however, we’re more relaxed and are doing what we can. So we need to stay focused and try to achieve the best possible result, even if we’re not in the best starting position. But first of all, I’d like to thank the team for their work, which is as brilliant as ever, and for helping me to keep improving.»

«Of course I’m very happy to be on the podium! At this stage of the season, it’s absolutely vital to be consistent, and I see this as a sort of redemption for last weekend, when I felt I deserved third place. It’s always nice to be back on the podium, so a big thank you to my team. They’ve done a fantastic job, because you may not forget that this was my first race weekend here at the Balaton Park Circuit. They really kept me calm from Thursday onwards. We did our work during practice to get to know the track and build up speed, and we managed both of those things well. It’s true, when I was chasing Fillip and Manu throughout the race, I was so close and wanted to attack, but I didn’t have enough to do so. Anyway, I felt a bit better on the bike, although the grip conditions today, for example, didn’t give me the best feeling. It’s all about learning, and we’ll analyse what we can do better next time. I feel completely at ease and have complete faith in our way of working. The bike feels really good. So, we just need to enjoy this moment, stay calm and work hard to carry on like this in the middle of the season and put ourselves in the best possible position for the end. I’m really proud and happy to be back on the podium. From the very first lap, I had no grip on the rear tyre to catch up with Manu and Filip. Let’s just say the conditions were different today. It was hot, of course, but as far as grip was concerned, I’d expected to have a bit more of an advantage with the rear tyre to keep up with them. So, I played it safe in the final laps to secure third place, which is an important result for the championship. Many thanks to everyone for this fantastic weekend – I’m already looking forward to Brno, where the track's layout is more fast and flowing and more enjoyable to ride than here.»

«Yesterday’s qualifying results for our two Moto2 riders show just how high expectations have become. With third and fourth on the grid, we might have hoped for a bit more, as Manu would normally have made it onto the front row. But things like that are often beyond one’s control.»

«As far as the race was concerned, we were well aware of the high pace both riders are capable of. However, we also had serious concerns about a collision, particularly regarding the first sector after the start on this track. But once the entire field had passed through and the order of all the drivers had settled down somewhat, we were able to breathe a sigh of relief, at least for the time being, as our two drivers were, as hoped, well ahead in the field. That was the key to another double podium; both had the pace needed to achieve it! We have won 6 out of 8 races this year; that is no coincidence, but the result of solid work by Manu, Senna and the whole team. We are very aware that this is no sure-fire success and that it won’t get any easier as the season progresses. We also know where we can and must improve. We will now work on that to maintain this momentum for as long as possible.»
