Almansa tops his return with a second-place finish in Hungary; Muñoz injured after battling for a podium

For the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP Moto3 team, Sunday following the Hungarian Grand Prix was a mixed bag. A heavy crash involving David Muñoz overshadowed the outstanding performance of David Almansa, who finished second on the podium.

Although he was still physically weakened, David Almansa gave no sign of it when riding his machine. Having only been discharged from hospital on Thursday morning following a bout of tonsillitis, the 20-year-old Spanish rider started from pole position in Hungary today, took the lead straight away and held it for six laps.

On lap seven, however, eventual race winner, Maximo Quiles, overtook Almansa, though the latter was initially able to keep up with the World Championship leader’s pace. In the closing stages, as Almansa also reached his physical limits, he had to let Quiles pull away but still held a comfortable gap over third-placed Alvaro Carpe. The 20 extra points added to Almansa’s tally helped him jump to fourth place in the overall standings.

However, the joy of Almansa’s podium finish was overshadowed by a serious incident involving teammate David Muñoz. By the final lap of the race, the 20-year-old form Seville had fought his way up from 17th on the grid to join the chasing pack, and his chances of finishing third on the podium looked strong. But then David and three other riders were involved in a crash, one of whom ran over the Intact GP rider.

Muñoz, who had only recently made a full recovery from a serious leg injury sustained last October, required medical attention at the circuit and was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Budapest. There, he was diagnosed with fractures in the left side of his pelvis, which are currently being treated surgically.

The entire LIQU MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP team is thinking of him and sending their best wishes, in the hope that he will make a speedy recovery and return as soon as possible.

The championship continues in two weeks' time with the Czech Grand Prix in Brno.
