Gonzalez and Agius to start the race from rows four and five
For the two Moto2 riders in the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP team, Manuel Gonzalez and Senna Agius, preparations for the Indonesian Grand Prix did not go quite as planned. Gonzalez will start Sunday’s race in 10th place from the fourth row, with Agius one row behind him in 13th place on the grid.
The small island of Lombok, located east of its better-known neighbour, Bali, is the second stop on the Moto2 World Championship’s annual Asia/Australia tour. The Mandalika International Circuit offers breathtaking views, but from the riders’ perspective, there’s hardly any time to enjoy them.
Manuel Gonzalez and Senna Agius started the weekend in third and fourth place, respectively, in Free Practice 1 on Friday morning and finished fourth and fifth in Practice session, which meant both qualified directly for Q2.
World Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez confirmed his current form with a fourth-place finish on Saturday morning and expressed confidence that he could secure a spot on the front rows in qualifying. In his second run following his pit stop, the 24-year-old Spanish rider was 0.2 seconds faster than his previous best time on his first flying lap; he then improved again but could not go any faster than 1:32.376. This left him 0.4 seconds behind the pole time set by his closest rival in the title race, Izan Guevara.
On the other side, in the German team’s garage, Senna Agius, who got off to a promising start on Saturday morning by posting the second-fastest time in free practice, had high hopes for qualifying. Unfortunately, the 21-year-old struggled to find the right feel during his time attack and will now have to make up ground starting from the fifth row.
The 17th race of the season will start early Sunday morning at 7:15 a.m. CEST, which is 1:15 p.m. local time.
