Strong qualifying performance in Malaysia: Almansa in 4th, Muñoz in 10th
The LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP Moto3 team continued its high level of performance in Malaysia: After a convincing weekend, David Almansa qualified for fourth on the starting grid, while David Muñoz also secured a good starting position for the Grand Prix of Malaysia with a tenth-place finish on Saturday afternoon.
David Almansa and David Muñoz showed up already in great shape during practice sessions at the Sepang International Circuit. While Almansa finished Friday as the fastest rider and consistently posted top times, Muñoz’s improved physical condition was clearly evident.
In qualifying for the 19th race of the season in Sepang, David Almansa once again made a lasting impression. Before the 20-year-old Spaniard entered the pits for his scheduled tire change, he set the fastest lap time of the qualifying session up to that point. His time of 2'10.571 was not beaten until the final minutes.
But the ambitious Spaniard wasn’t willing to settle for that lap time and made a last-minute attempt to improve it. After setting a fast pace in the first sector, he soon found himself in heavy traffic on track. That proved to be his undoing in a corner, where he was a bit too late on the brakes and ruined the lap. But with fourth place on the second row of the grid, absolutely nothing is lost at the massive Malaysian Circuit, and the path is clear for another shot at the podium.
David Muñoz showed a promising upward trend. For one thing, advancing directly to Q2 was no major hurdle for the 20-year-old from Seville, and on Saturday morning he impressed with a strong race preparation. In qualifying, Muñoz once again demonstrated his potential, even if this wasn’t fully reflected in the results. Starting from tenth place, the Spaniard will begin the race from the fourth row, putting him in a solid position for Sunday.
The Moto3 race is scheduled to start on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. local time, which is just before 5:00 a.m. CET in Europe.
