Almansa charges to another Pole Position in Misano

David Almansa continues to perform strongly at this weekend’s round 14 of the season at Italy’s Misano World Circuit. On Saturday, the Spanish rider secured his sixth pole position of the season. Teammate David Gonzalez has had a difficult weekend so far — LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP’s substitute rider will start from P26 on the grid.

At the San Marino Grand Prix, changeable weather played a role during the practice sessions. Both, on Friday morning and Saturday, on-track action began under mixed conditions, but that didn't stop David Almansa from impressively demonstrating his current high level of performance.

The 20-year-old talent from Spain finished both Friday’s session as the fastest rider in the highly competitive Moto3 field. In Free Practice 2 on Saturday morning, which took place mostly at a wet track, he finished in second place. This once again made him one of the top contenders for the top spot on the starting grid. 

Plenty of sunshine, a light breeze, and warm temperatures had completely dried out the 4.2-kilometer track at the Misano World Circuit till the battle for the best starting positions got underway. After a few laps, Almansa moved to the top of the timesheet. On his final lap, he gave it his all once more and built a lead of more than 0.2 seconds over the second-placed rider.

David Gonzalez, who is once again filling in for David Muñoz, has so far this weekend been unable to match his performances from previous race weekends. On top of that, he’s had a few crashes, all of which, fortunately, ended without serious injury, but they’ve taken a toll on the young Spaniard’s confidence. In qualifying, he ended up in 26th starting position on row eight. Gonzalez is now fully focused on Sunday’s race, where he is determined to turn things around.

The Moto3 race begins on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. CEST.
