Muñoz and Almansa with spectacular comeback in Jerez

After a long time off from racing due to an injury, David Muñoz showed great determination and even secured a spot on the front row in today’s qualifying. No less motivated is Thailand pole-setter and race winner David Almansa at his home Grand Prix; he will start Sunday’s race from eighth place on the third row of the grid.

On Thursday, following the medical check, there was a huge sense of relief within the LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP Moto3 team when David Muñoz and David Almansa received the green light from the race doctors. And that wasn’t the only reason for happiness, as both riders delivered impressive performances right from the very first minute of practice on Friday morning.

David Muñoz, who returned to the track and his team practically on his doorstep this weekend, wasted no time getting back into shape. After finishing in P11on Friday morning, he shone in Practice session, securing second place. On Saturday morning, he finished eighth in the second free practice session on a rain-soaked track.

By the time qualifying began, the track had dried out again, which gave the 19-year-old an extra boost of motivation. Muñoz made a splash early on by immediately taking the top spot on the timing board. He stepped it up a notch during his final attack. It wasn’t until the very last moment that his compatriot Maximo Quiles snatched the pole position from him. Second place on the grid is still well above expectations.

Teammate David Almansa started the weekend in sixth place after Free Practice One and was more than a second faster in Practice session, securing fifth place and the direct entry into Q2. There, the 20-year-old Spaniard finished eighth and is well aware of his chances in the race.

The starting time for the fourth race of the Moto3 World Championship is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. local time on Sunday.
