With full force into the Mugello Grand Prix
The 2022 season is gathering pace, with the Gran Premio d'Italia Oakley taking place this weekend from 27th - 29th of May, 2022 at the all-time-favourite and incredibly fast Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello.
The Italian Grand Prix not only marks the eighth stop on the now reduced to 20-race MotoGP calendar for 2022, after the premiere of the Finnish Grand Prix had to be postponed until 2023, but also the first of two consecutive showdowns in which the LIQUI MOLY Intact GP team hopes to continue its upward trend.
Once again, thousands of fans are expected over the three days of the event. Time to mix up the quiet hills around the 5.2 km Tuscan race track.
Marcel Schrötter demonstrated that he knows how to master Mugello in 2021 with a strong fifth place. Can the 29-year-old deliver another top performance on the track, which is one of his favourites not only because of its incomparable atmosphere? Should the German manage to position himself among the top 10 on the grid for Sunday's 21-lap race in qualifying on Saturday, the current World Championship eighth will be one of the biggest contenders for a place in the top five, if not on the podium, thanks to his undeniably strong race pace.
Meanwhile, team-mate Jeremy Alcoba is not really up for anything less. Although he has only ridden at Mugello once, the track is also one of his favourites, so he hopes to be able to fight for more World Championship points after finishing within the points a whopping six times in the first seven Moto2 races of his career. The 20-year-old also finished the 2021 Italian Grand Prix in the points with P15, but the two World Championship classes are by no means comparable, so it remains to be seen how the Spaniard will cope with his Kalex. Alcoba still leads the 'Rookie of the Year' standings by ten points, so much of his motivation and ambition lies in continuing to keep his seven fellow rookies at bay on the road to Barcelona next week.
