Agius shines with 4th place in Brno; Gonzalez extends Moto2 lead with P5

On Sunday, both LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP Moto2 riders impressed with their unwavering fighting spirit in Brno. Senna Agius finished fourth despite losing his right knee slider, while Manuel Gonzalez fought his way up from 13th on the grid to fifth place after receiving a grid penalty.

Senna Agius, who started from fourth position, had set his sights high for the season’s ninth race. On the third lap, however, the 21-year-old Australian had a scare when a knee pad came loose from his leather suit. Despite this significant handicap, Agius delivered a strong race, finishing fourth and moving within striking distance of the second and third placed riders ahead of him in the overall standings.

While everything seemed to be going smoothly until shortly after Saturday’s qualifying session — in which World Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez finished fourth — a penalty for slow riding during qualifying, which set the Spaniard back nine grid positions, dampened the excitement a bit. However, that was no reason to get discouraged; instead, he needed to stay focused and keep his cool. The 23-year-old managed this with flying colours.

Starting from the fifth row, Gonzalez passed three opponents on the first lap and continued to move up the field until the end, eventually crossing the finish line in fifth place. The fact that he passed his closest rival in the overall standings, Izan Guevara, on the final lap is doubly valuable for the world championship standings, as it allowed him to further extend his lead at the top.

From the Czech Republic, the entire paddock will now travel directly to Assen, to the historic TT Circuit and the legendary World Championship round in the Netherlands, which takes place at the upcoming weekend.

«Fourth place isn’t quite what we deserved today, because I felt like I could have won with this bike, and the top riders weren’t far ahead of me. But on the third lap, I lost a knee slider. With my long legs, everything’s been banking in the corners in the corners, and the bike almost threw me off. I really had to stay calm to maintain a consistent pace. Now we’re entering a phase where we can score good points for the championship in every race, and that’s really important for us. We’re slowly climbing up the championship standings and staying consistent — and that’s the key in Moto2. So, I’m pretty satisfied. We need to head to Assen in full motivation and in attack mode to keep improving and fight for the win there. Many thanks to the entire team, which once again did a great job.»

«It was an extremely tough race, because it was the first time this season that I had to start from the back and try to make up positions. On top of that, the extremely hot conditions didn’t help. The bike and the tires overheated, which made it hard for me to ride my usual style, since I’m not used to situations like that. Still, I’m satisfied because we made it into the top 5 — that’s our basic goal for every race — even though we started from a position a bit further back on the grid. Overall, Brno was a really good weekend, and if we’d started further up the grid, we could have fought for the podium or even the win today. But the championship is still long, and we were able to extend our lead in the overall standings once again. So, I’m super happy with our performance this weekend. Thanks so much to everyone for their support.»

«It was a very solid race, but also an exciting one. Manu’s comeback was impressive. He had to work hard and fight his way forward, one-tenth at a time. He was rewarded with a fifth-place finish. It was especially important that he was able to secure that fifth-place finish on the very last lap. I think that was the best we could do today, and we can be more than satisfied with that. His pace was on par with the leading group. In this class, you can’t afford even the smallest mistake, and if you’re not up front from the start, it becomes extremely difficult. Manu did an outstanding job, kept his cool, and took home the maximum possible points. He and his crew once again did a fantastic job.»

«Senna was also extremely strong today. Unfortunately, he lost a knee slider during the race. Anyone who’s ever been at a racetrack knows what that means. It’s a huge disadvantage. To still finish in fourth place under those circumstances deserves the utmost respect. He just as easily could have lost positions or even had to retire from the race early. That’s why we’re very happy with his result. That was a truly strong performance.»
